A Night of Music Magic Celebrating Nina Simone

On Wednesday, January 25th, 2012, The Beehive, located in Boston, MA, presents a tribute to the acclaimed vocalist Nina Simone and other fine ladies of jazz with cuisine, libations and live entertainment. Join The Beehive for this celebration of an American icon as The Beehive's "Queen Bee of Blues" Toni Lynn Washington and the venerable Sharon "Brown Sugar" Jones take the stage for a night of scintillating performances!

The event pays homage to Nina Simone, one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century, an icon of American music. She was the consummate musical storyteller who used her remarkable talent to create a legacy of liberation, empowerment, passion, and love through a magnificent body of works. Simone earned the moniker 'High Priestess of Soul' for she could weave a spell so seductive and hypnotic that the listener lost track of time and space as they became absorbed in the moment.

When Nina Simone died on April 21, 2003, she left a timeless treasure trove of musical magic spanning over four decades from her first hit, the 1959 Top 10 classic "I Loves You Porgy, " to "A Single Woman, " in 1993. While 33 years separate those recordings, the element of honest emotion is the glue that binds the two together – it is that approach to every piece of work that became Nina's uncompromising musical trademark.

Be there when the music starts and the spirit of Simone comes alive at 8:00PM. The evenings featured artists will be the venerable Sharon "Brown Sugar" Jones and The Beehive's 'Queen Bee of the Blues' Toni Lynn Washington, a singer's singer whose career spans over four decades. Washington is a blues treasure with a vocal power that showcases her class and grace. She is a multiple W.C. Handy Award nominee and has sung with the best of the best soul and blues performers. Sharon "Brown Sugar" Jones brings a sound steeped in the gilded, gritty notes of gospel, soul and funk. Along with the Nina Simone book, the greats Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington will all be covered in this very special performance.

The night's music will be complemented by the culinary contributions of Executive Chef Rebecca Newell from 5:00PM-2:00PM. Guests are welcome for a full dinner, or to choose from The Beehive's collection of cocktails and snacks at the bar while they enjoy the show. No matter what you do, don't miss this chance to celebrate one of the most extraordinary artists of the 21st century!
