| Vincent Gardner to Perform in Daytona Beach on January 22 The North East Florida Jazz Association will present trombonist Vincent Gardner in concert on Sunday, January 22 at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach. This year marks NEFJA's 25th anniversary. Gardner, 39, is the lead trombonist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the musical direction of Wynton Marsalas. He has performed and recorded with other jazz notables including Marcus Roberts, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Count Basie Orchestra, Harry Connick, Jr., McCoy Tyner, Nancy Wilson and a host of others. In addition to performing as a sideman, Gardner has also recorded four albums on the Steeplechase label as the leader and also has taught at Julliard School of Music. This is an especially proud moment for NEFJA. This concert marks the beginning of their 25th year as an organization. The icing on the cake, however, is that Gardner was the recipient of their 1995 scholarship and has gone on to become an internationally acclaimed jazz musician, composer and educator. "We're very proud of Vincent, " said NEFJA President Muriel McCoy. "He exemplifies what NEFJA's mission is all about—keeping jazz alive by presenting live jazz performances to local audiences at reasonable prices and by providing scholarships to talented young musicians enrolled in a jazz studies program at a Florida college or University. Vincent's not only a wonderful world-class performer, but as an educator he helps ensure the perpetuation of America's indigenous music by sharing his knowledge, experience and love for the music with aspiring music students. He is the future of jazz." Performing with Gardner will be NEFJA Vice President Doug Carn on piano, Leon Anderson, Jr., on drums, and Rodney Jordan on bass. Prior to the concert, the Seabreeze High School Jazz Band from Daytona Beach will be performing from 1:30ר:15 p.m. in the Museum's Root Hall. The Vincent Gardner concert will begin at 2:30p.m. in the Museum's auditorium. The Museum of Arts and Sciences is located at 352 S. Nova Road, Daytona Beach. Tickets for the concert are $25 for NEFJA and MOAS members, $30 for non-members, and $15 for students with valid ID. NEFJA is featuring an early bird special and tickets purchased before January 9 are available at the discounted price of two member tickets for $40 or two non-member tickets for $50. They can be purchased in advance by mail (P.O. Box 352552, Palm Coast, FL 32135), at Aimee's Hallmark in Palm Coast, on the NEFJA website www.nefja.org or by calling Muriel McCoy at 386-445-1329. NEFJA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the perpetuation, performance, preservation, and promotion of jazz. In addition to bringing nationally and internationally known jazz performers to the local area, the group awards scholarships to talented young students enrolled in a Jazz studies program at a Florida college or university. write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
