A stellar group of musicians comes together from different backgrounds...Jewish, Iraqi, Palestinian, etc., to perform music influenced by Pakistani Qawwali vocalist Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn written by award-winning jazz flutist/composer Jamie Baum. These works were funded in part by the Composer Assistance Program of the American Music Center. "...on a cold night in January this reviewer decided to experience the Jamie Baum Septet at Joe's Pub in the east village. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Each tune was gripping, and played to perfection by the ensemble. The best compliment that can be given to such compositional creativity is that all concept of the passage of time was lost... I had been transported...for what seemed like precious few moments, but it was enough to leave me breathless and wanting more." - David Miller, All About Jazz "Baum is that rare double-threat: a musician who can play and write equally well. Her gift for combining complexity with viscerally appealing rhythms and attractive melodies is certainly uncommon... (She) winds through the material with unerring grace, generating long flowing lines that yield nothing to her bandmates." — Jazziz write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
