The 1971 released "What's Going On" album spent over a year on the Billboard Pop Album Charts and had sold 2 million copies by end of 1972. In 2004, the album's title track was ranked #4 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and #6 on the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It was one of the 50 recordings chosen in 2003 by the Library of Congress to be add to the National Recording Registry. It was a surprise that Motown would release such an album because the album directly challenged social and political concerns of the day. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Gaye stated "I realized that I had to put my own fantasies behind me if I wanted to write songs that would reach the souls of people. I wanted them to take a look at what was happening in the world." "[What's Going On] still strikes a particular chord with listeners because of its timeless themes and sound. [Our 40th Anniversary Celebration] is going to be a memorable evening, " says Harold Watkins, Invictus Productions CEO. The concert features 9 of today's most talented soul & jazz artists, each performing an interpretation of one song from the album. Artists performing include Anthony David, Avery Sunshine, Joey Sommerville, Julie Dexter, Phonte (The Foreign Exchange), Carmen Rodgers, Rahbi, Kipper Jones and The Darryl Reeves Group. The event will be hosted by Jamal Ahmad of WCLK's Soul of Jazz. In celebration of the album's 40th anniversary Invictus Promotions is also producing a limited edition 40th Anniversary Tribute Concert Booklet highlighting the evening's performances and the story behind the album and its songs. write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
