Marisa Anderson/Doug Theriault at Revival Drum Shop

For the past decade, The Creative Music Guild has provided an outlet for musicians from around the world who don't fall into your typical genre categories, acts that play fast and loose with the boundaries of jazz, electronic, and rock. To that end, the Guild (formed by musicians Rob Blakeslee and Rich Halley) has often had to seek out unusual spaces to put on its shows, including It's A Beautiful Pizza, churches around the Portland metro area, and art galleries.

With that spirit in mind, the Guild will, starting Wednesday, November 16, hold The Outset Series, twice-monthly concerts at Revival Drum Shop, a music store for percussionists located on NE Prescott. As the guild says in its press release, "We aim to provide musicians of diverse approaches ... with a regular performance opportunity while fostering a community in Portland that supports this music."

And to start the series, the Guild has chosen a pair of local musicians that exemplify the best wide-ranging sounds our city has to offer: Doug Theriault and Marisa Anderson. The former works in the medium of spacious, droning electronics—the kind that borders on white noise, but offers a lot of airy melodics and moments of startling beauty—often using instruments of his own design. The latter is one of Portland's best guitarists, who released The Golden Hour earlier this year, which explores early jazz, African highlife, and delta blues by way of meaty improvisations.
