| Icelandic pianist releasing new album on the London Jazz Festival Icelandic jazz pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs is releasing a new trio album on November 12th at the London Jazz Festival. However, the digital release will be Nov. 11. That is, 11/11/11 at 11:11pm EST. It was just too good to resist. With her on the album is her long-time cohort Scott McLemore on drums and fellow Icelander bassist Thorgrimur Jonsson. The material is predominantly originals by all 3 musicians, with the exception of one piece by Rufus Wainwright and one by Ben Harper. Gunnlaugs' previous albums have been almost exclusively quartet ventures with various saxophonists such as Tony Malaby, Ohad Talmor, Loren Stillman and Sigurdur Flosason. This is actually the first trio album she's done since her debut in 1997. Another interesting thing about this release is that she's using Kickstarter to help cover some of the production costs. This has the great benefit of allowing fans to pre-order the album and also get some exclusive items, such as a DVD with interviews and behind the scenes footage from the making of the album, extended liner notes and photos from the session... you can even commission a new Sunna Gunnlaugs composition. Very prestigious. There are three pre-release tracks on the Kickstarter page for your streaming pleasure. For the rest you'll just have to wait for 11/11/11 at 11:11pm EST. write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
