Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to induct 11 Iowa acts Sept. 4

Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk, it's still rock and roll to me" ... and to the new inductees to the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Eleven Iowa individuals and groups will be added to the hall in ceremonies next Sunday in Okoboji: the Expressions from Pocahontas; Roadhouse and Tommy Eglin, both from Sioux City; Midnite Express from Decorah; the Sheffields from Eddyville; Freedom Road from Burt and Algona; Sticks N Stones from Estherville; Tim Canfield of Cedar Rapids; the Buzzards from Iowa City and the Mad Hatters and Dartanyan Brown, both from Des Moines.

Founded in 1997, the Iowa Rock and Roll Music Association honors a handful of homegrown rock stars each year on Labor Day weekend. The association singles out musicians as well as behind-the-scenes players who influenced the industry in some way or another at various radio stations, recording studios or dance halls. This year's festivities honor the ballrooms at Oelwein's Coliseum, Spirit Lake's TAHO Club and Creston's famous Chicken Inn, among others.

The Hall of Fame includes more than 100 honorees among its ranks. Some are famous (Buddy Holly, Dic Youngs), many are fabulous (the Fabulous Flippers, the Fabulous Uniques, the Fabulous Morticians) and a few should have won a prize just for their names (Sparkle Moore, Upson Downs, the Beachniks).

In addition to doling out awards, IRRMA organizes concerts and offers educational history programs for schools, churches and youth groups statewide.
