Taos Chamber Music Group gives thanks for support

For its special Contributor's Concert, the Taos Chamber Music Group is once again bringing back the renowned and highly entertaining flutist Keith Underwood. He will be joined by pianist Barbara Lee from New York City as well as TCMG director and flutist Nancy Laupheimer for a program of music from the Baroque (a sonata by Jean-Marie Leclair) to a recent duo for flute and bass flute by Gary Schocker called "Adventures Under a Leaf, " according to a TCMG press release.

The concert will take place Sunday (Aug. 21), 4 p.m., at the home of Suzanne and Bob Brock, overlooking the Río Grande Gorge. The performance, followed by refreshments, is TCMG's way of thanking contributors to the upcoming season. Admission is free to those who have made contributions to TCMG.

TCMG has announced its new season, according to a press release from Laupheimer. It will begin with concerts planned Sept. 10-11 in the Arthur Bell Auditorium at the University of New Mexico's Harwood Museum of Art, 238 Ledoux St. The first of 14 performances that run through May of 2012, Laupheimer says the program will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Following the Contributor's Concert, Underwood will be heading to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú for a week-long flute master class, where he will work with professional flutists from all over the United States. He serves on the faculties of Mannes School of Music, New York University and Queens College. Each year he travels internationally to Japan, Mexico, Italy, Brazil and London to perform and teach.

In New York, Underwood has appeared with the city's most prominent musical organizations, including the New York Philharmonic, New York Chamber Symphony, Orpheus Ensemble, and Orchestra of St. Luke's. He is solo flutist with Parnassus, Musical Elements, Jazz Antiqua, the Arcadia Baroque Ensemble, Ufonia and the Riverside Symphony; has recorded with such diverse artists as Benjamin Verdery, Celine Dion, Kathleen Battle, Rod Stewart, Bobby McFerrin and Anthony Newman; and appears frequently on the David Letterman Show.

Lee has performed in a variety of venues from Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center to the Big Apple Circus., according to Laupheimer. Equally adept at classical and jazz music, Lee is a sensitive accompanist and has specialized in Brazilian music. She performs with many of the country's leading flutists, and currently plays keyboards in the band Joyride. Lee served on the faculty of Wagner College for many years and has produced several well-received concerts through grants from the New York State Council on the Arts.

Laupheimer, who founded the Taos Chamber Music Group in 1993, has also played with the Santa Fe Symphony, Santa Fe Music Festival Outreach, Musica de Camera Orchestra, Santa Fe Festival Ballet, Desert Chorale, New Mexico Music Festival, Serenata of Santa Fe, Music from Angel Fire, the Dorian Wind Quintet, and the American and Helios String Quartets.
