| Expo Latino 2011 Lineup Release 2011 marks 15 years of unparalleled success for Calgary's Hottest Music Festival, Expo Latino. The celebrations for this milestone call for the return of favourite past performers. "We are ecstatic that so many of our previous headliners are excited to come back and perform in Calgary again, " says Artistic Director Carmen Galvez, " the audience always wins them over and now Expo Latino has become a destination for artists." The reunion will include Wil Campa y su Gran Union, a 13 piece orchestra from Cuba. High energy, talented and sexy, those are just some of the adjectives that can be used for this band. This is their third performance at Expo Latino and is sure to be their best. Expo Latino will be importing some great talent from Puerto Rico, including the Latin Grammy nominated Michael Stuart, Cheka the Prince of Reggaeton and the worlds # 1 merengue band Grupo Mania. "It is not an easy job to wittle down a select few talents from another continent, " admits Galvez, "and Puerto Rico is busting at the seams with talent, thankfully these performers made the selection process a bit easier." Compadres, featuring Oscar Lopez and James Keelaghan, are reuniting for a special Expo Latino performance after a few years apart. The Juno award winners combine to create the sound affectionately known as "Celtino". Lopez's playing injected energy and edginess into Keelaghan's smooth baritone. Ache Brasil, Winners of "Live Performers of the Year" at the West Coast Music Awards, was last seen at Expo Latino in 2009. Their performance of music, dance and martial arts is sure to wow the crowd again. A new addition to the line up is the king of Bachata, Carlos Cruz, from Dominican Republic is sure to get people on their feet. All performances are upbeat and involve dancing, so every year a custom dance floor is built and placed in front of the stage. "Some festivals are known for sitting and enjoying the atmosphere, but dancing is a huge part of our culture, so there is no sitting in front of the stage, " Galvez adds, "That just wouldn't happen. Our performers interact with the audience and expect audience reciprocation." Other performers include Los Hermanos Carcamo, Sin Reserva, Orquesta Caribe, New Wave Vallenato Band, Pana Band, Rumba Caliente, Banda Brava, Latin Combo Band, Oliver Miguel's Jazz Quintet, and more! Expo Latino 2011 will take place August 26th – 28th at Prince's Island Park. Weekend passes are only $25 and available at all Calgary Co-op stores or expolatino.ca. Daily passes will be available at the gates. Free admission for seniors over 65 and children under 12. write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
