Tony Brown brings soulful mix to TAP

If you're looking for heart and soul, look no further. Professional musician Tony Brown has been playing his impossible-to-classify mix of soul, R&B, blues and reggae across the country and around the world for decades, and he makes his first appearance at Third Avenue Playhouse for a Saturday concert.

This concert will be different than Brown's usual club shows, in that the songs and message will be of more importance than the artist here. Brown also will feature his original art and recorded music at this presentation.

"The artist is the tool for delivery, the message is the main course of the evening's performance, " Brown said in a press release.

An Iowa native, the singer/songwriter and guitarist has recorded 20 albums and spent much of his adult life living in Wisconsin. He moved to Belize in 2004 but returned to the states three years ago and now lives near family in the Iowa City area.

Brown's music encompasses a wide range of styles and has been influenced by artists like Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Taj Mahal, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Marvin Gaye and Sting.

Next to performing, Brown said listening to and encouraging the next generation of musicians is his greatest joy. He runs the Big Backyard Jam Session every other Thursday at an Iowa City location.

"It's how I got started myself, " he said. "These are juniors and seniors in high school. One kid, his mom or dad drives him 30 miles. Why do I do it? It's that."

Tony Brown takes the stage for a special concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Third Avenue Playhouse, 239 N. Third Ave., Sturgeon Bay.
