| Cape Town’s Musical Talent Creative Cape Town, in partnership with Red Bull Studio, Paul Bothner Music, BPM magazine, African Dope Records and online Cape Town music station Mutha FM, have launched the Goematronics Remix Competition and are inviting local musicians and digital enthusiasts to create their own goema-inspired remix Goema – the musical idiom found at the heart of jazz standards by Abdullah Ibrahim, Robbie Jansen and Basil "Mannenberg" Coetzee – has long been an integral part of Cape Town's social tapestry and soundscape. The introduction of the Remix Competition comes complete with significant prizes are on offer: First prize includes a full week's worth of Red Bull Studio time – including use of the studio, recording and music production equipment, and the time of an engineer to oversee the project – valued at R35 000, as well as studio software Cakewalk from Paul Bothner Music, valued at R5 500. The competition runs from 1 July to 28 August 2011. To qualify, entrants must load at least one goema-inspired remix onto the Goematronics group on SoundCloudwww.soundcloud.com/groups/goemarati-remix-competition before midnight on 28 August 2011. Goema beats, banjo and sax samples can be downloaded from SoundCloud or entrants can create their own. The winners will be announced during Creative Week Cape Town, between 9 and 18 September 2011, following a decision by the judging panel, which includes Roach (African Dope Records), Mr Mo (Mofunk) and Denver Turner (formerly of Moodphase5 and Tykoon Suit). Says Creative Cape Town's Zayd Minty: "We have this wonderful home-grown sound and we have real talent in our city. Our hope is that this competition will fuse these two elements and sow the seeds for a truly Capetonian musical movement." THE GOEMATRONICS STORY SO FAR In the late 1980s, quintessential goema rock band The Genuines created the musical precedent that Mac McKenzie and Hilton Schilder would later use and fuse with Latin beats and electronics, working with the likes of the late Alex van Heerden, The Goema Captains of Cape Town and Rock Art. In 2008, Goematronics emerged as a cultural hybrid. Through a process of touring and mixing professionally and socially, a group of Cape Town musicians – notably Fletcher (African Dope Records), Andre Swanepoel (Mr Mo), Warrick Sony (Kalahari Surfers) and Peter Abrahams (DJ) – began creating new songs using goema samples. Now the call to expand this body of work has gone out.
