| Musician Coalition Threatens Grammy Boycott After Category Cutbacks A coalition of musicians, Latin jazz percussionist Bobby Sanabria, are threatening to boycott CBS' Grammy Awards show after the Recording Academy cut 31 awards from this year's Grammys, Rolling Stone reports. An official Grammy press release described the reduction of categories from 109 to 78 as an ongoing "evolution." However, SANABRIA characterized the downsizing as racist in nature because it "unfairly shorts ethnic music, " as categories such as Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album, Best Latin Jazz and best Classical Crossover were dropped in favor of more mainstream ones. The ACADEMY responded with the following statement: "The RECORDING ACADEMY's board of trustees and its committees - made up of elected, qualified voting members from The Academy's 12 chapter cities around the country and a broad spectrum of music makers - spent two years researching and ultimately making the decision to restructure the GRAMMY AWARDS categories for reasons that had everything to do with recognizing excellence in music and the integrity of our awards and nothing to do with ethnicity or race." write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
