| Guess who's coming back to Newport ... Dave Brubeck returns to perform with sons Jazz legend Dave Brubeck has been an integral part of the Newport Jazz Festival since 1955, appearing at the world-renowned seaside event more than any other musician. George Wein and the Newport Festivals Foundation are proud to announce that the famed pianist will join the Brubeck Brothers Quartet as a special guest on Sunday, August 7, at Fort Adams State Park at the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival Presented by Natixis Global Asset Management. Deemed a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress, Brubeck is among the most influential musicians in jazz as well as classical music. At 90, he is extraordinarily active and popular and continues to share his musical magic around the world. With a career that spans over six decades, highlighted by landmark pieces like "Take Five, " his experiments in odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint, polyrhythm and polytonality remain hallmarks of innovation. "I have been a friend and admirer of Dave Brubeck for nearly 60 years, since I first met him when he played Storyville, my jazz club in Boston, in the early 1950s, " said Wein. "His graciousness as a human being can only be compared to his dedication to his personal artistry. He is on the very top of the list in both areas. Dave Brubeck represents the best that jazz has to offer." Consisting of Brubeck's sons, Chris (bass and trombone) and Dan (drums), as well as guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb, The Brubeck Brothers Quartet has played at numerous prestigious concert series, colleges, and festivals (including Newport), all across North America and Europe. "My brother Dan and I used to go to Newport for the Jazz Festivals in the 60's when we were just little kids, " said Chris, "Amazingly, here we are about half a century later looking forward to playing at Newport once again with The Brubeck Brothers Quartet. Dan, Mike, Chuck and I are blessed to have Dave Brubeck sit in with us at this summer's Festival. We share a great history, respect and musical camaraderie. At 90, our father continues to teach us so much about life, creativity, and the joy of making music. This should be fun!" An award-winning composer, Chris Brubeck has established himself as the go-to composer for genre-bending modern classical music, and has even been likened to a "21st century Lenny Bernstein" (Chicago Tribune). His brother Dan, in addition to performing with his father in the legendary Dave Brubeck quartet, led his own group, The Dolphins, which released three CDs that have been played extensively in the U.S. and Japan. Last year, Dave Brubeck celebrated his 90th birthday with a special performance with Wynton Marsalis' band.
