| Wynton Marsalis for Ronnie's in August Five years after trumpeter Wynton Marsalis marked the relaunch of Ronnie Scott's club under the ownership of Sally Greene in August 2006 he returns to the club for five nights 16-20 August 2011. In a press release, the club suggests that Marsalis's appearance in a club setting is part of a trend among leading artists. Last summer, he was in residence in the much larger auditoria of the London Barbican: "It isn't just Marsalis - over the past five years, iconic artists such as Tony Bennett, Dame Cleo Laine, Van Morrison, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Michel Legrand and Jeff Beck have all chosen to forgo the concert hall in favour of Ronnie Scott's peerless sound, acoustics and its intimate yet vibrant atmosphere. Plus, on July 11th legendary British jazz guitarist John McLaughlin will grace the Ronnie Scott's stage for the first time since the late 60s." In a footnote, the press release says that under the management of Simon Cooke, Ronnie's is "celebrating unparalleled success, running at a remarkable 98% capacity for the past two years and boasting a 211% increase in membership in the same period." write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
