| 3rd Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition The winning jazz combos and big bands were announced at the conclusion of the 3rd Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition that was held at Manhattan School of Music on Sunday, February 20th. Sue Mingus and Justin DiCioccio, the event's producers announced the following winning ensembles: Combo Category (Gunther Schuller, Vincent Herring and Boris Kozlov, judges) Best Combo - Regular Category - Rivers Select 1 A Combo from The Rivers School in Weston, Massachusetts Best Combo - Specialized Category - MSM Precollege Combo from Manhattan School of Music, NYC Big Band Category (Justin DiCioccio, Donny McCaslin and Ku-umba Frank Lacy, judges) Best Big Band - Regular Category - Medfield High School Jazz Ensemble from Medfield, Massachusetts Best Big Band - Specialized Category - Jazz House Kids Big Band from Montclair, New Jersey Other awards were given for outstanding arranger, 14 outstanding soloist awards, best big band section awards and two Mingus Spirit Awards. At the awards ceremony, Justin DiCioccio said, "Everyone who competed today was a winner. The level of playing was remarkable and the best that I have ever heard at the high school level." Sue Mingus added, "For years, Mingus's music was thought to be too difficult to perform... The future of music is in the hands of these kids.
