| Marilyn Maye to Perform at BIG ARTS Friday, March 11 Legendary jazz singer Marilyn Maye take the stage 8 p.m. Friday, March 11, at BIG ARTS.In an October 2010 Wall Street Journal review, culture critic Will Friedwald wrote, "Marilyn Maye is pretty much every singer you ever wanted to hear: She has the rhythm and musicianship of a great jazz singer, the projection and personality of a heavyweight Broadway diva, and creates the intimate bond with her audiences that we demand from a cabaret artist." Maye has been singing since childhood, and she began her long run of appearances on Johnny Carson's TV show in 1966, the year she was nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy. In the 1970s, Maye switched to theater, starring in productions of "Can Can, " "Mame, " and "Hello, Dolly!" She played regional theaters and performing arts centers for many years and in 2008, Maye was "rediscovered" at a cabaret convention at Lincoln Center, where she earned the prestigious Nightlife Award for Outstanding Cabaret Vocalist in a Major Engagement. A series of performances at New York's Metropolitan Room followed, winning critical raves and leading to major engagements across the U.S. She calls herself "the overnight success who's been working all of my life." "Ms. Maye, who at 82 personifies a hardy, upbeat show-business trouper, swung Broadway standards in a dark, honeyed voice untouched by the years, " raved New York Times music reviewer Stephen Holden of her Metropolitan Room show. "Again and again, Ms. Maye embraced show tunes that beat the drums for savoring the moment, wrapping her rich, robust voice around perky, cheerleading lyrics with an earthy conviction that revitalized their feel-good truisms."
