Lizz Wright Set for Dusseldorf Stage

American jazz star Lizz Wright will perform in Dusseldorf as part of her brief European tour next month. The 31-year-old singer is due to play at the Savoy Theatre on Thursday March 24th, when fans will be able to hear tracks from her recent album Fellowship.

Released in September last year, the 12-track record features collaborations with the likes of Angelique Kidjo, Joan as Policewoman and social activist Bernice Johnson Reagon.

It is the fourth studio album from Wright, who started out as a gospel singer before turning her attentions to jazz and blues.

Born in a small town in Georgia, she grew up singing at her local Pentecostal church. It was not until her late teens that Wright began to incorporate popular styles of music into her performances.

"The funny thing about the transition from only gospel to jazz is that I felt that jazz had a familiar sacredness to it, " Wright explained in an article on her official website.

"In all of my adventures in music, I've been drawn in by sparks of the familiar inside of the unfamiliar."

Wright's debut album Salt topped the contemporary jazz charts in 2003 and led to comparisons with another emerging jazz artist, Norah Jones.

She followed it up with Dreaming Wide Awake in 2005 and 2008's The Orchard, which featured musical contributions from members of the band Calexico.
