| Loras jazz students will end tour with concert As part of a January term course titled, "The Loras Jazz Experience, " Loras College students will perform a free, home gala concert. It will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the Marie Graber Ballroom, Alumni Campus Center. "The Loras Jazz Experience" is a study and travel course that focuses on the performance of jazz styles in both instrumental and vocal music. Students in the ensembles will spend a week of listening, learning and rehearsing music before performing at schools, churches, shopping malls and community centers throughout the Midwest. The home concert in Dubuque will be the culminating performance of the Jan. 8-19 tour, during which they will perform in cities such as St. Louis, Paducah, Memphis, Cincinnati and Chicago. The ensemble will be directed by Glenn Pohland, assistant professor of music, and Bruce Kotowich, associate professor of music. Students will study jazz styles including swing, salsa, big band, bossa nova, latin, rock and others. A variety of instrumental and vocal selections will be rehearsed and performed. "Jazz is a truly American form of music pioneered by great performers like Scott Joplin, Fats Domino and the Gershwins, " Pohland said in a press release. "This will be a great opportunity for our students to learn more about jazz music and to share their music with others. In addition to performing, students will get to hear some great jazz music while we are in Memphis." write your comments about the article :: © 2011 Jazz News :: home page |
