| Lauryn Hill is Back, Again The date is set. Lauryn Hill, winner of five Grammy Awards, is making a return, yet again, after being on hiatus for the past three years. Hill, now 35, is expected to perform at the sixth annual "Jazz in the Gardens" in Miami, Fla. festival next year, according to a press release. Other artists lined up for the March 19-20 festival include Gladys Knight, Charlie Wilson and En Vogue. The South Florida Times reported nearly 45, 000 guests were present at this year's event. However, Hill's return might not be so promising - at least for some fans. The singer had a string of unsuccessful concerts in 2007 that spurred mixed opinions. Music critics tended to point out her raspy voice and profuse sweating. But it wasn't just the media. Fans began to question whether she was still the same 22-year-old "Ms. Hill" they once knew. During her Wingate Field concert in Brooklyn, New York, some audience members booed her and left early because she was hours late, according to XXL magazine. Similarly, in another concert the same year, a reported 75-100 fans made an early exit at Paramount Theatre in Oakland, Calif., shortly after performing only four songs. Fans also requested refunds since Hill hadn't made her appearance until 80 minutes after the first performance, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. One critic wasn't afraid to share his harsh opinion on Hill. "Her voice was terrible, so harsh, strained and unlike what one hears on the masterful 'Miseducation' CD, " Jim Harrington from the the San Jose Mercury News said in a concert review. "She also sounded like she's out of shape, huffing and puffing like a weekend warrior after only a few songs." write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Jazz News :: home page |
