PCC Wind Ensemble marks 20th year

The Pima Community College Wind Ensemble is celebrating its 20th anniversary season this year with rich programs that mine the gems of the traditional wind ensemble literature.

On Thursday, the group, under the baton of director Mark Nelson, will perform a concert that includes Caesar Giovannini's Overture in B flat and Harry Fillmore's "Americans We." The haunting "Elegy" by John Barnes Chance is a stark contrast to Alfred Reed's "Russian Christmas Music, " which elevates medieval Russian chant melodies into a full concert band fabric of sound.

Also during Thursday's concert, the brass ensemble, flute choir, percussion ensemble and clarinet-saxophone ensemble will perform chamber music selections, including Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride."

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre, 2202 W. Anklam Road. Tickets are $6, with discounts available; 206-6986.

Also this week: The PCC Jazz Ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Proscenium Theatre. Tickets are $6.

Sax man Wintringham celebrates CD release

Saxophonist Jonathan Wintringham can make his horn sing.

When he plays, his sound has a way of swallowing a room and all that's in it, drawing you into the musical world he is creating.

He is young and exciting, as audiences last spring learned when he performed Tomasi's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

Freshly graduated from the University of Arizona, Wintringham has wasted no time in putting his talents out in the market. On Monday, he will perform a concert to celebrate the release of his debut CD, "Walimai." It includes world premieres, chamber music and tango, according to a press release.

Wintringham will share the stage with pianist Kathryn Christensen, saxophonist Derek Granger, violinist Miray Cakir and guitarist Joshua Rhoads.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. Monday in Holsclaw Hall, at North Park Avenue and East Speedway. Admission is free. Details: Call 621-2998.
