| Conversations with Filipino American Performing Artists by Ron Sagye La Rue Stage Presence is quite a unique book put out by Meritage Press. Upon viewing the cover and title it reveals nothing about Jazz, but of the 10 artists featured between the covers, 5 of the artists are very connected to Jazz. Gabe Baltazar a saxophonist who played with Stan Kenton's band in the 1960s, and shared the bandstand with Cannonball Adderleyand Charlie Mariano. Others like Poet Jessica Hagedorn worked with musicians like Julian Priester, Jay Hoggard, Butch Morris. Hagedorn was influenced by the Art Ensemble of Chicago and more cutting-edge Jazz in San Francisco and New York. Choreographer/cultural activist Pearl Ubungen has worked with saxophonist Roberto de Haven who was a minister a the St.John Coltrane church. Eleanor Academia a keyboard player whom Columbia records didn't know where to market her. Bascially, a popular artist was placed in the Jazz category with Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis. Though she's performed with the late Joe Zawinul and listen to Art Tatum. Stage Presence is available now at Meritage Press. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Jazz News :: home page |
