| Magnolia Klezmer Band performs at NC Museum of History Based in the Triangle area of North Carolina, The Magnolia Klezmer Band performs Eastern European Jewish music from Romania, Moldava, Russia and the Ukraine blended with American traditional jazz and swing. And if you stop by the Museum early, you can explore the exhibit Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina, which chronicles how Jews have integrated into Tar Heel life by blending their own traditions into Southern culture while preserving their ethnic and religious traditions. Admission to the exhibit is also free. The band's unique sound comes from the mingling of musicians with roots in a panorama of musical traditions: Klezmer, Balkan, jazz, brass band, polka, and classical. The band continues to expand its repertoire with additions from vaudeville, Russian/Roma cabaret music, and Eastern European folk dances. Now nearly 14 years old, the band has 12 -15 regular members who perform in the "industrial strength" concert band. Smaller subgroups play for weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, parties, benefits, and other celebrations. The newly formed Magnolia Klezmer Quartet plays regularly at Raleigh's Irregardless Café. They have also performed at prime regional venues in the Triangle/Triad area of North Carolina, including the Cat's Cradle, the Carrboro Arts Center 30th anniversary and the WorldArts Festival, Jewish Film Festivals, the Raleigh International Festival, Weaver St. Market Jazz Brunch, and many others, including performances at various North Carolina synagogues. In 2006, some band members appeared on NPR's "The State of Things." In 2007, the entire band performed as part of PineCone's own Music of the Carolinas series. They recorded that concert, which became the CD Trip to Amerika. Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina is a traveling exhibit that is part of the first major effort to document and present more than 400 years of Jewish life in North Carolina. Produced and organized by the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina (JHFNC), the exhibit will be open at the Museum of History through March 7, 2011. After Down Home closes in Raleigh, it will travel to Greensboro, Wilmington, Charlotte and Asheville. This compelling exhibit is part of a four-part multimedia project, also titled Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina, organized by the JHFNC. The project also features a critically acclaimed documentary film, a companion book published by UNC Press, and fourth- and eighth-grade curriculum guides with DVDs for all North Carolina public schools. Former governor James B. Hunt Jr. is Honorary Chairman of the project. The Magnolia Klezmer Band's performance will begin at 3 p.m. in the NC Museum of History's Daniels Auditorium. It is free and open to the public, and program notes will be provided. Large-print program notes will also be available. Come early or stay late to check out the Down Home exhibit, too!
