Jazz Luminaries Conduct Free Music Workshops at LIU Brooklyn Campus

Several top names in jazz will lead master classes this fall as part of the "Jazz Clinic and Concert Series" at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. The free events will be held in the Campus' Humanities Building, Room 106. The Brooklyn Campus is located between DKkalb Avenue and Willoughby Street in downtown Brooklyn. Admission is free. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 4 p.m. — Amir ElSaffar, an Iraqi-American trumpeter, santour player, vocalist and composer, will conduct a master class on Arabic music. He incorporates the traditional musical styles of his cultural background with modern sensibility. Whether playing trumpet in a jazz context or santour in an Iraqi setting, ElSaffar brings an authenticity to his music that speaks to audiences globally.

Tuesday, Oct. 19, 4 p.m. — Critically acclaimed pianist Helen Sung will lead a master class on jazz improvisation. Winner of the Kennedy Center's Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition, Sung has been called "one of the brightest emerging stars in jazz today." The Asian-American artist and composer challenges stereotypes with a compelling, unique voice informed by her virtuosity in classical, jazz and popular music.

Tuesday, Nov. 2, 4 p.m. — Percussionist Bobby Sanabria will hold a master class on Afro Cuban music. Drummer, composer, arranger, recording artist, educator and multiple Grammy Awards nominee, Sanabria has performed with a veritable Who's Who in the world of jazz and Latin music — including Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, and the godfather of Afro-Cuban Jazz, Mario Bauzá.

Tuesday, Nov. 23, 4 p.m. — Justin Binek, the head of vocal jazz studies at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia will conduct a master class on vocal jazz. Binek directs the UArts Jazz Singers and two small jazz ensembles.

The Brooklyn Campus Music Department offers programs leading to a B.A. in music (applied music or music theory), a B.F.A. in jazz studies and a B.S. in music education in urban schools.
