| 2010 Garvin Gate Blues Festival The free festival is planned for Friday, October 8, from 6:30-11 pm, and Saturday, October 9, 3-11 pm, at the Gate on Garvin Place and Oak Street in Old Louisville. The event is presented by the Garvin Gate Neighborhood Association, with sponsorship by Louisville Metro Government District 6 Councilman Deonte Hollowell and the Franklin Law Group. A celebration of the blues, The Garvin Gate Blues Festival attracts a multi-racial, intergenerational audience to the cozy Old Louisville neighborhood of Garvin Place. "A big thanks goes out to Mike Suttles for helping secure our internationally acclaimed music line-up, " said Howard Rosenberg, Chairperson. "This could very well be the finest Garvin Gate Blues Festival ever!" Friday's headliner is legendary Mississippi delta bluesman, James "Super Chikan" Johnson. The nephew of fellow blues musician Big Jack Johnson, Super Chikan began his recording career in 1997 with Blues Come Home to Roost, followed by additional albums What You See, Shoot That Thang, Chikan Supe, Sum Mo Chikan, and Chikadelic which won the Traditional Blues Album of the Year at the 2010 Blues Music Awards. Super Chikan was also honored as a nominee for the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year and Traditional Blues Artist of the Year. The Saturday theme is Blues Dames and Divas Night with Cheryl Renee and Them Bones from Cincinnati, followed by headliner Deitra Farr, former singer for Mississippi Heat from Chicago. The Garvin Gate Blues Festival will be her first USA performance in three years.
