Jazz Sudbury adds free concert to festival lineup

Jazz Sudbury is saying "thanks" to the Greater Sudbury community for its support by ending the weekend festival with a free concert at Laurentian University. Kellylee Evans, an award-winning Ottawa-based jazz artist, will close the festival with a show at 8 p.m. on Sept. 12 in the Fraser Auditorium. Joining her on stage will be Sudbury's own Borealis Jazz Quartet.

"We are thrilled to be able to announce a free concert for the community, " Paul Lefebvre, festival chair, stated in a press release. "We had a free concert at last year's inaugural festival that featured the Shuffle Demons, and the response was fantastic."

The festival is set to take place on the grounds of Science North. Performers will also play at off-site venues like the Townehouse Tavern and Little Montreal.

"We're really excited about adding this free concert and the after-hours venues to our lineup, " Chris Kivinen-Newman, artistic director, stated. He said the additional venues "compliment" the main stage shows.

Some highlights of the festival include performances by Oliver Jones and Ranee Lee.

"Both Oliver Jones and Ranee Lee have had storied careers that have seen them perform at the greatest venues in the world, " Lefebvre stated.

"Having these two performers headlining Jazz Sudbury really puts our festival on the map. If you love jazz, then you already love these two artists; if you aren't too familiar with jazz but love great music, Oliver and Ranee are the perfect introduction to live jazz music because they're simply the best at what they do."

Alex*Cuba, Brandi Disterheft and Manteca will also put on feature shows, and contest for northern Ontario's next jazz sensation will also take place.

"We think there is a huge pool of untapped jazz talent in northern Ontario, and we want to give some of those voices a chance to shine, " Kivinen-Newman stated.
