Underground in Tempe, AZ

Changing Hands Bookstore, whose motto is There's more to a bookstore than the bookshelves, has made a new addition to those same shelves, a novel by now-local author, Baker Crawfield; a novel called, Manhattan Underground.

Both Changing Hands Bookstore and Baker Crawfield have a shared conviction, and that conviction is independence. As an independent bookstore, Changing Hands has proved itself to be both a popular part of its community and a beneficial one. As an independent author of Manhattan Underground and partner in his publishing company, Underground Publishing, Baker Crawfield pledges to be a beneficial member of this same community: "I will donate ten percent of Underground Publishing's profits to organizations in need in and around the Phoenix/Tempe area."

Mr. Crawfield hales from the city streets of New York and has intimate knowledge of Manhattan and the four other boroughs. He came to Phoenix by chance and found in it a world of opportunities.

Manhattan Underground is about Jazz and Jazz musicians, young love and lust, Heroin and its poisonous addiction. It is a tour de force of everything Jazz in New York City where somewhere in its large undercurrent still pulses the heart of Jazz.
