13-year-old racks up 5 trophies at accordion championships

Emmanuel Gasser, 13, has been writing his own music for about three years, and has written 30 original compositions. He recently took home five trophies from the Kimberly International Old Time Accordion Championships.

The Kimberly International Old Time Accordion Championships, held in British Columbia, were a success for Greater Sudbury's Emmanuel Gasser.

The 13-year-old accordion player competed in six categories, played solo concerts and in band concerts.

In the competition aspect of the event, Gasser won first place in the intermediate class, second place in the classical, junior and jazz classes and third in the popular class. He also placed eighth in the Happy Hans category, and was the youngest contestant to ever take part.

According to a press release, Gasser is "very happy with his achievements, but also exhausted after such an activity-filled week."

Through the competition, he received offers to play in Las Vegas, Russia and China, but he stated he is still considering his options.

Gasser said he is looking forward to competing in the Kimberly International Old Time Accordion Championships again next year.
