Jazz festival's lineup grows

Jazz performer Alex*Cuba will be performing at the second annual Jazz Sudbury festival. The festival recently added three more acts to its lineup. The lineup for the second annual Jazz Sudbury Festival is growing.

Joining the lineup is Toronto-based jazz pianist Elizabeth Shepherd, seven-time Maple Blues Awards harmonica player of the year Carlos Del Juno and Brazilian guitarist Carlos Bernardo.

They are joining Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee, Manteca, Alex*Cuba and Brandi Disterheft as headlining performers.

"We wanted to focus on musicians who were not only great jazz artists, but would have a wider appeal, " Chris Kivinen-Newman, Jazz Sudbury artistic director, stated in a press release.

"We went with people who were the best of the best but would also give us great variety. For example, Alex*Cuba plays a lot of jazz, but is phenomenal at Cuban soul-rock."

A number of current and former Sudburians, including Elena Kapeleris, Sundar Viswanathan, Stef Paquette and Sarah Craig will also perform at the festival. The children's group Brood Bop, lead by Hilary Welch, will also perform.

Kivinen-Newman said workshops are a big part of this year's festival as well. A Saturday afternoon session will feature Oliver Jones, Manteca and Brandi Disterheft.

"Oliver Jones was really excited to do a workshop because he used to teach music at Laurentian University, so he said this is like coming back to his roots, " Kivinen-Newman said.

The Jazz Sudbury Festival will take place Sept. 10-12 at Science North.
