| Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul At NYC Club Jeff Beck played a small gig in honor of the legendary Les Paul, who was both his mentor and friend, at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York on Wednesday night. The British guitarist performed at the same club that Paul had also played in every Monday night for years in front of a handful of celebrities. Joining Beck onstage were Dublin rockers the Imelda May Band, who shared vocals on the songs "How High The Moon" and "Vaya con Dios, " which were both made classic by Paul and Mary Ford. Beck also played covers of "Walking In The Sand, " "Sleepwalk" and "The Peter Gunn Theme." He ended the night with Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" and "Shake, Rattle, and Roll." Meat Loaf commented on Beck's performance, saying, "How does he do it? His playing comes from a place in the heart that exists in so few people. It's like the performance by that guy in the Godfather II (John Cazale) and how he overshadowed Al Pacino." Metallica's Kirk Hammett also attended the special tribute concert for the rock star pioneer, among several other musicians. Paul died last August, and would have turned 95 the night of the show. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Jazz News :: home page |
