11th Anniversary of Atlanta’s Oldest Jam Session

Danny Harper's jam sessions take place on Tuesday nights at Churchill Grounds from 9:30 pm - 12:00 am. There is a $7 cover and a $5 minimum. Celebrations begin on June 29th and continue on July 6th, July 13th and July 20th. Danny will be performing songs by Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Thelonius Monk, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and Charlie Parker. Three legends will be featured each Tuesday for the first three weeks and two legends will be featured on the final week. Danny's goal is to play and revive songs that even though they are by popular artists, aren't played as often. "I hope people will enjoy sounds they don't get to hear enough, " he explained. BestofAtlantaConcerts.com will be giving away CDs, t-shirts and tickets among other prizes to celebrate.

Churchill Grounds is an intimate place similar to a European lounge. Its candle-lit tables and pictures of jazz legends on the wall help make it a shrine to jazz. It attracts some of the city's best musicians like Joe Gransden, Russell Gunn, and WCLK radio personality Riva Blue. Producer and actor Tyler Perry used the venue as a setting for his 2005 film "Diary of a Mad Black Woman." Part of Churchill Grounds' appeal is the musical melting pot along with the different styles of jazz such as vocal jazz and bluesy jazz. Dior Metcalf of bestofatlantaconcerts.com says "I've loved this place since the first time I stepped in the door. It's a good place to go to reconnect with your sanity.''

Danny Harper's jam session attracts a variety of people ages 20 to 70, including both locals and tourists. The musicians and audience together make up a racially diverse crowd. Celebrities such as rap star Ludacris, singer India Arie, comedian Ron White, and actress Winona Ryder have all patronized of Churchill Grounds. Anyone who comes is sure to feel welcome.
