Marilyn Mazur wins new jazz prize

The first international jazz musician to receive the new EuroCore JTI Jazz Award is Danish percussionist Marilyn Mazur. The award, which a includes a cash prize of 10, 000 Euros, will be presented to Marilyn at a prize ceremony on December 3rd at the EuroCore Jazz Club in the German town of Trier. The news was announced at the Jazzahead trade fair in Bremen last weekend.

Mazur, introduced to the jazz world at large by Miles Davis, with whom she toured for three years, first came to ECM as a member of Jan Garbarek's group in 1990: she appears on his albums "I Took Up The Runes", "Twelve Moons", "Visible World" and "Rites". Mazur's most recent ECM album under her own name is 2008's "Elixir", an album of duets with Garbarek and pieces for percussion.

Later this year she will record with her new quartet featuring singer Josefine Cronholm, pianist John Taylor and bassist Anders Jormin.
