| Oscar Peterson statue coming to a corner near NAC Ottawa City Council today cleared the way for a statue of jazz pianist Oscar Peterson at the corner of Elgin and Albert Streets, adjacent to the National Arts Centre building. Council needed to waive its Encroachment By-law to permit the cast bronze statue to be installed on the City's right-of-way. The Montreal-born Peterson died at the age of 82 in December 2007. He is Canada's best known jazz pianist and is ranked as one of the world's greatest jazz virtuosos. Because Peterson performed at the NAC many times, it is considered to be a fitting venue for the permanent display of a commemorative statue. Ruth Abernethy has been selected to create the statue. Her best known work is the portrait "Glenn" (1999), a bronze, life-sized statue of Canadian pianist Glenn Gould seated on a bench in front of the CBC's Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Jazz News :: home page |
