A Musical Reunion Of The Sixties: 'the Bronx Hoot Reunion Weekend

From 1961 to 1967 Hunter College in the Bronx produced seminal Folk Music Concerts that included well known artists: Bob Dylan, Danny Kalb, Artie and Happy Traum, David Grisman, Andy Statman, Peter Wernick, and Eric Kaz. On Friday May 21st at 8PM a Special Reunion Concert will be held at the Lovinger Theater of Lehman College which was originally Hunter College in the Bronx. Many of the original performers are returning and donating their performances in a benefit for the Bronx River Alliance. The concert features Danny Kalb (The Lead Singer of the Blues Project), Happy Traum (President and owner of Home Spun Tapes) and other well known artists from the day as well as Irka Mateo a young folklore singer from the Dominican Republic.

62 years ago two boys from the Bronx, Gerry Segal and Danny Hamburg, who lived on the block of 211th street and Bronx Boulevard became friends and played along the Bronx River which ran right across the street where they lived. They later met again during their college years when they both were musicians in the Folk Music Revival of the 1960's and participated in the Hunter College Uptown Hootenannies. Life took them separate ways. After retiring from the fields of education and computer science they met yet again and decided to create a project that connected both these significant life events. The outcome is the Bronx Hoot Reunion Concert.
The concert is part of a two day event set for Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22, will feature the concert, a tour of the Lehman campus, and "jamming and canoe rides" along the restored Bronx River.
In the spirit of the folk music period, all proceeds will benefit a good cause: the Bronx River Alliance. The Alliance works in partnership with non-profits, government agencies, schools, and businesses to reclaim the river as a community asset, a destination, and a force for revitalizing the Bronx. Fundamental to this effort is the creation of a continuous Bronx River Greenway, which the Alliance is developing in partnership with the City's Department of Parks and Recreation.
The concert includes, The Danny Kalb Trio(Leader of Blues Project), Happy Traum, David Bennet Cohen(member of "Country Joe and the Fish"), Bob Rose, Linda LoPresti, Danny Hamburg, Gerry Segal, The Trevone Marching Jug and Skiffle Band, Billy Schneiderman, Alan Chartock, Bob Gurland, Bob Malenky, Anne Price (Siegel), Gerry Tenney, and Gene Yellin.
