| Moreira voted Cultural Personality of the Year Cape Town based, multi award-winning jazz saxophonist, Moreira Chonguica has been awarded the Cultural Personality of the Year 2010 by Radio Moçambique; the country's leading radio station. Moreira attended the annual Ngoma Awards in Maputo, his home town, this month and was also privileged to present the 'Song of the Year Award'. Highly recognised as one of Africa's finest saxophonists, Moreira is always well received by local and international audiences, especially for his high energy and exceptional on-stage performances that educates younger generations on the diversity of jazz. To date, both Moreira's albums 'The Moreira Project Volume I' and 'The Moreira Project Volume 2 – 'Citizen of the World' have won him numerous local and international awards. States a very humble Moreira: "It's truly an honour to receive this award especially since culture plays a huge part in my music and my life. I always try to incorporate and embrace our culturally diverse world into my music, and in that way, I would hope that by doing so there is something in my music for everyone and every age to appreciate." Each of the Ngoma Awards is named after an artist who contributed significantly toward the development and promotion of the arts in Mozambique, not only as a way of paying tribute to the heroes in the arts but also as a constant reminder of the rich artistic background. write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Jazz News :: home page |
