| Enjoy ancient sounds of west Africa at UMSL Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba will perform ancient traditional west African music at 7:30 p.m. April 7 in the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater in the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Bassekou plays Bambara music from the region of Segu. He has transformed the traditional music of the ngoni instrument into the modern world of today. With his band Ngoni Ba, Bassekou has opened up the magic of an age-old music that he and his band have played for people all over the world. As blues musician Taj Mahal puts it, "Basssekou is a genius, a living proof that the blues comes from Segu." The Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba North American tour is sponsored by the Center for International Studies and the Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL in collaboration with World Music Institute.
