| Berklee's 42nd Annual High School Jazz Festival by Nick Balkin Berklee College of Music's 42nd High School Jazz Festival will feature more than 3, 000 students and 200 big bands, combos, and vocal ensembles competing for $175, 000 in partial scholarships to Berklee's Five Week Summer Performance Program. The annual event is the largest of its kind in the U.S. All concerts are free and open to the public, and will take place on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at the Hynes Convention Center, 900 Boylston Street, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Scholarship and award winners will be announced at 6:00 p.m., followed by a winners showcase concert at 7:15 p.m. The event will also feature free clinics by trombonist and Grammy-winning producer Delfeayo Marsalis, drummer Peter Erskine (Steely Dan, Weather Report), and trumpeter Eric Miyashiro (Sammy Davis Jr., Maynard Ferguson), and performances by the Crescent Super Band, an internationally touring all-star high school ensemble from Utah, Berklee's Concert Jazz Orchestra, and Global Jazz Institute, City Music, Salsa, and P-Funk ensembles. New this year is Band Slam, a non-competing category for students who play non-jazz styles, from hip-hop to bluegrass.
