| Anat Cohen's 'Clarinetwork: Live At The Village Vanguard' Out April 13 On April 13, Anat Cohen will release her first live album, 'Clarinetwork: Live At The Village Vanguard' on her own Anzic Records. The album was recorded on one evening - July 5, 2009 - during an historic 6-night residency at the legendary venue in which Cohen honored the centennial of clarinet legend Benny Goodman. The album is a musical tour-de-force that finds Anat reworking the Goodman oeuvre as you've never heard it before, joined by the stellar rhythm section of Benny Green (piano), Peter Washington (bass), and Lewis Nash (drums). The album release coincides with another milestone, the 75th anniversary of the Village Vanguard, and adds to a rich history of iconic live albums recorded there. Anat described her experience performing at the venue: "You can go as deep as you want musically at the Vanguard. It's a sacred place. You feel the history when you're on that stage. You feel as if the spirits are there; they're listening." Now a veteran of five Vanguard residencies (including one with The 3 Cohens, the group she shares with her two brothers), Anat is the first female horn player and the first Israeli to headline and record there. Anat will celebrate the release of 'Clarinetwork' by mounting her most extensive U.S. tour to date, mixing solo shows and performances with the Anat Cohen Quartet and her Clarinetwork ensemble. See dates below. In 2009, Anat was named Clarinetist of the Year for the third consecutive year by the Jazz Journalists Association. She was also honored with the Jazz Wall of Fame Prize for Composition and Musicianship from ASCAP. Cohen's last album, 'Notes From the Village, ' (Anzic) reached #1 on the CMJ Jazz chart and has received across-the-board critical praise. In a 4-star review, Downbeat called the album "killer" adding that Cohen mixes "a gift for melody and an improvisational fluidity that has few peers today." write your comments about the article :: © 2010 Jazz News :: home page |
