Hiromi's New Album 'Place to Be' (Jan 26/Telarc)

Although there isn't a string bass in sight, when jazz piano phenom and composer Hiromi plays solo piano on her new album 'Place to Be' (Jan 26/Telarc International), you'll still hear a virtuoso bassist - Hiromi herself, plucking the lower strings on her Yamaha Grand at a breakneck, "how'd she do that?" pace. Her left-hand bass lines on the piano's keyboard are equally dazzling.

Hiromi's explosive, unorthodox technique is evident everywhere on the disc, her first album of piano solos. On one track, her unique, syncopated version of Pachelbel's Canon, she says, "I put a metallic ruler in the piano and took it off with my right hand while I was playing with my left hand during the song. It was pretty hard..." On another track she raps percussively on the piano case - whatever it takes to express her unique vision.
