Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona Hosts the Jazz Century

Music enthusiasts visiting Spain and staying in hotels in Barcelona will be in their element this autumn, with a jazz exhibition currently taking place in one of Barcelona's most popular museums. Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona is hosting the Jazz Century - an exploration of the history of the music genre from the early 20th century to the present day.

The exhibition - which is now open - runs until October 18th and features dozens of interesting pieces, including concert programmes and other publicity material collected over the last 100 years.

Although it is difficult to put an accurate date on the birth of the genre, Jazz Century traces the roots of the music from 1917 - the time when the word jazz was first coined.

Those attending the exhibition will have the chance to learn about 1920s jazz in the US and the period known as the Harlem renaissance, when African-American musicians received cultural recognition.

Meanwhile, a section dedicated to the development of jazz in Europe focuses on the arrival of La Revue Negre and Josephine Baker in Paris.

The exhibition also deals with the advent of bebop, west coast jazz and the contemporary jazz music produced in the 1980s and 1990s.

Located close to Montalegre and Valldonzella, the museum is served by metro lines one, two and three.
