Speech Debelle Wins Coveted UK Mercury Prize

Speech Therapy, the debut record from Big Dada artist Speech Debelle, repped for sync licensing in the US by Mophonics and in the EU by Sync Inc, beat out an impressive field of artists including Kasabian, Florence and The Machine, Bat for Lashes, La Roux, Glasvegas, Friendly Fires and The Horrors for the coveted UK Mercury Prize "Best Album of the Year."

Produced by Wayne Lotek (Roots Manuva) and Big Dada founder Will Ashon, the record is sure to convert many new fans following it's Mercury Prize accolade this week.

BBC UK music critic Elle J Small writes: "Four things make newcomer Speech Debelle stand out from the rap pack: her articulate flows, her poetic swagger, her cinematic beats and, of course, her gender. While Speech Therapy is unlikely to go platinum, it is destined to become an album adored by musos, critics and intellectuals."

Says Debelle: "There's a lot of music that sounds the same, all day on the radio, " she told journalists. "Hopefully people will hear this album and realize they don't have to make music that sounds the same - they can make music that sounds good. It brings in many influences from jazz, folk, blues, even old TV soundtrack music. It's very British, which I think is wonderful."

MophonicSync is the partnership between bicoastal music production and licensing company Mophonics and London licensing firm Sync Inc, forged to bring the best British and European labels and artists to film, television, advertising, games, and trailers in the US market…
