| Kate Dumbleton - Executive Director of The Chicago Jazz Ensemble The Chicago Jazz Ensemble and Artistic Director Jon Faddis welcome Kate Dumbleton as the new Executive Director of the ensemble, effective today. She replaces J. Richard Dunscomb, who shifts emphasis to fully devote his time to his position as Chairman of the Columbia College Chicago Music Department and to the Sherwood Community Music School. "It has been a pleasure as well as a remarkable experience to have worked with Dick Dunscomb for the past two years. Dick is a dedicated administrator who has helped lead The CJE to greater achievements and an educator who cares deeply about preparing the next generation of jazz musicians, " said Jon Faddis. "We are looking forward to working with Kate as we take The CJE into the next phase of its future." Ms. Dumbleton has been working in the arts in various capacities since 1994. In addition to owning her own successful art exhibition and performance space in San Francisco, her experience includes music direction and programming for jazz clubs and festivals; curatorial and project direction of artist residencies for nonprofit arts organizations; project and production direction; venue and record label management; administrative direction; and artist management. She has worked with a diverse group of jazz and improvised music artists, performing arts centers, museums, and dance and theater companies. Her most recent work includes projects with jazz composer/musician Marcus Shelby, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, curator/writer John Corbett, the Chicago Composers Forum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Spoken Word Artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, AACM members George Lewis, Douglas R. Ewart and Nicole Mitchell, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Yerba Buena Garden Festival and the Chicago Cultural Center. Ms. Dumbleton graduated Cum Laude with a BA in History and English from Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, and has an MA in Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. "After a long search and review of a number of outstanding candidates, we believe we have selected an Executive Director who is creative and talented and whose vision will take The CJE into new directions without compromising the integrity of the music and the outstanding reputation the ensemble has built since it first took up residency at CCC in 1965. I am pleased to pass the baton to Kate and I look forward to working with her in years to come, " said Mr. Dunscomb. Ms. Dumbleton joins The CJE in time to kick-off The CJE's 11th American Heritage Jazz Series highlighting the music of Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong as well as contributions from Mr. Faddis' own songbook. The season includes the world premiere of Made in Chicago – World Class Jazz: The Benny Goodman Centennial Celebration with special guests NEA Jazz Master Buddy DeFranco and Victor Goines on September 3, at 6:30 pm at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park; The Rhythm Within, an evening of outstanding music featuring Steve Turre on trombone and shells, on October 2, at 7:30 pm at The DuSable Museum of African American History; and Honoring 1959: The Music of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Miles Davis, featuring two of today's most creative young saxophonists, David Sanchez and Steve Wilson, at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, on December 10, at 7:30 pm. The season continues with The Great Summit: The Music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington on January 15, 2010, at 7:30 pm at the Harris Theater; Jazz: Past, Present and Future, the American premier of Jon Faddis' "Teranga" as arranged for big band at the Harris Theater on March 5, 2010, at 7:30 pm; and In the Mood for Moody with NEA Jazz Master and Grammy-nominee James Moody at The Cindy Pritzker Auditorium at the Harold Washington Library Center on April 16, 2010, and The DuSable Museum of African American History on April 17, 2010, both at 7:30 pm. write your comments about the article :: © 2009 Jazz News :: home page |
