| The Chicago Jazz Ensemble Announces The 11th American Heritage Jazz Series The Chicago Jazz Ensemble and Artistic Director Jon Faddis announce the 11th American Heritage Jazz Series highlighting the music of BennyGoodman, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong as well as contributions from Mr. Faddis' own songbook. Featuring specialguests Buddy DeFranco, Victor Goines, DavidSanchez, Steve Wilson, Alioune Faye, Baba Faye, SteveTurre and James Moody, the 2009 - 2010 season takes The CJE to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park, the DuSable Museum ofAfrican American History and the Cindy Pritzker Auditoriumat the Harold Washington Library Center. The CJE's 11th American Heritage Jazz Series kicks off with the world premiere of Made in Chicago - World Class Jazz: The Benny Goodman Centennial Celebration on Thursday, September 3, at 6:30 pm at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. The CJE, with special guests NEA Jazz Master Buddy DeFranco, clarinet, and Victor Goines, clarinet, commemorates the centennial of Chicago's own "King of Swing, " the legendary Benny Goodman, featuring both classic charts and contemporary arrangements of Goodman's music, including works from The Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York's library, originally premiered at Carnegie Hall. The program features Mr. DeFranco - the Father of Bebop Clarinet - on big band charts. Mr. Goines premiers his composition, "Benny: Then, Now and Forever" (commissioned by The ASCAP Foundation and Columbia College Chicago with support from The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation) with The CJE. The CJE's vocalist, Bobbi Wilsyn, will perform classic Goodman songs while The CJE showcases other Goodman favorites, which will feature The CJE's own Rob Denty on clarinet. The Goodman celebration is a prelude to the Chicago Jazz Festival and concludes the 2009 Made in Chicago summer series, presented by the City of Chicago, the Jazz Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park. One of the world's great jazz innovators, Steve Turre, joins Jon Faddis and The Chicago Jazz Ensemble for The Rhythm Within, an evening of outstanding music featuring Turre on trombone and shells, on Friday, October 2, at 7:30 pm at the DuSable Museum of African American History. In addition to performing his own compositions, Turre will perform works by J. J. Johnson, recognized as one of the greatest jazz trombonists of all time. Head to the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, on Thursday, December 10, at 7:30 pm to be a part of Honoring 1959: The Music of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Miles Davis. Two of today's most creative young saxophonists, David Sanchez and Steve Wilson, join The CJE in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Coltrane's "Giant Steps, " Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come, " and Davis' "Kind of Blue." In 1959, these extraordinary innovators released three of the most ground-breaking, adventurous and influential recordings in Jazz history. Don't miss this stellar tribute as Mr. Faddis takes the ensemble and special guests on an anniversary journey through the music that continues to shape the sound of today's jazz. The 11th American Heritage Jazz Series continues with The Great Summit: The Music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellingtonon Friday, January 15, 2010 at 7:30 pm at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. The CJE performs Ellington favorites from The CJE's library and special Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York arrangements of Armstrong classics, including "What A Wonderful World, " "Swing that Music, " and "Stardust." The CJE's founder, William Russo, had a special relationship with Ellington. Mr. Faddis, who performed with Ellington, is a Yale University Duke Ellington Fellow and has presented the Duke's music around the world. This concert officially kicks off the third annual Louis Armstrong Legacy Program and Celebration (LALPC), Mr. Faddis' educational initiative for students in Chicago Public Schools. Join The Chicago Jazz Ensemble at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance on Friday, March 5, 2010, at 7:30 pm for an exploration of Jazz: Past, Present and Future. Don't miss the American premier of Jon Faddis' "Teranga" compositions (from his critically-acclaimed album) arranged for big band by Michael Philip Mossman. The concert also features Slide Hampton's "Africa" (music commissioned in 2004-2005 by The CJE for Mr. Faddis' first season as Artistic Director) and arrangements by The CJE's founder, William Russo. Special guests on "Teranga" and "Africa" include Alioune Faye on djembe and Baba Faye on sabar. Dana Hall, The CJE's Music Director and drummer, also will be featured. Get In the Mood for Moody and head to The Cindy Pritzker Auditorium at the Harold Washington Library Center on Friday, April 16, 2010, and The DuSable Museum of African American History on Saturday, April 17, 2010, bothat 7:30 pm. NEA Jazz Master and Grammy-nominee James Moody brings his saxophone and songs, including his trademark "Moody's Mood for Love, " for an exciting evening with The Chicago Jazz Ensemble and long-time friend Jon Faddis. In addition, The CJE will present original Dizzy Gillespie charts from Mr. Faddis' own library and new arrangements of Mr. Moody's classics commissioned by The CJE. The 11th American Heritage Jazz Series also includes pre-concert lectures and master classes with guest artists.
