| Wolf Trap Jumping with Multi-Cultural Audience The Gipsy Kings conquered the stage at Wolf Trap's Filene Center this past weekend with their rumba rhythms and flamenco guitar. The Southern France natives performed many songs from their album releases throughout the years, including Mosaique, Love and Liberte, and Tierra Gitana. Fans drawn from numerous ethnicities and ages filled the ample lawn seating area for the flamenco sounds of the guitar, their favorite songs and the enticing summer weather. "Once I hear a solo on the guitar, I know they're going to deliver, " said Kave Inanloo, a fan of the band for ten plus years. It is said the left handed members of the band strums the guitars upside down. Only those fans that pay close attention may recognize this unique style of performing. One of the "Kings" long time followers of fifteen years, Carolyn Dupleises, expressed her love for the band and their unique sound. "I love how they command the stage with the mastery of the guitar beats", said Dupleises. To this day, the Gipsy Kings are noted in history as the best selling music group from France, having sold over eighteen million albums worldwide, although many of the musicians descend from families who fled Spain during the civil war. With many inspiring dance songs, the group has themes of love and passion in their music, with special attention to the way the ladies move to their beats. "I am thrilled that Wolf Trap (Foundation for the Performing Arts) has taken the lead in multicultural outreach. By bringing the Gipsy Kings, one of the most recognized groups our Latino community embraces, they are opening the doors for all of us to enjoy arts and music to the fullest, " said Nelly Carrion, Director of the Washington Hispanic Newspaper. The Gipsy Kings closed the show with their self- titled 1987 debut release hit single, "Bomboleo", which left the fans wanting more. Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in partnership with CapitalWire PR will be hosting a series of multi cultural outreach events throughout the summer. Blues and gospel great Buddy Guy and special guest Susan Tedeschi will take the stage Sunday evening. Tickets to Wolf Trap performances and additional information are available at www.wolftrap.org. Wolf Trap plays an important leadership role in both the local and national performing arts communities through an extensive range of creative and artistic programs. They offer several venues as well as a primary education institute for early learning through arts. Performances include something for everyone ranging from pop, blues, country, folk, and opera, as well as original performance art and presentations. In Addition, Wolf Trap has established public/private partnerships with nonprofit organizations to increase community outreach, create diverse programming, develop educational programs and publicity; and raise funds to support the programs while keeping ticket prices affordable for all. write your comments about the article :: © 2009 Jazz News :: home page |
