| Astor Piazzolla’s, Maria de Buenos Aires, Opera Tango Legendary Argentinean Composer Astor Piazzolla's Maria de Buenos Aires A Full Performance of the Acclaimed Opera Tango Available on DVD July 28. Astor Piazzolla was the quintessential Argentine composer/musician trained in the musical traditions of Argentine, as well as classical music and jazz. He is the creator of a body of exceptional works of such range, style and depth that could only be conceived by someone who has had such cross-cultural experiences and talent. He studied piano under Hungarian pianist Bela Wilda, a disciple of Rachmaninov, and performed with such jazz luminaries as saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and vibraphonist Gary Burton. No work better exemplifies Piazzolla's musical genius more than his opera tango Maria de Buenos Aires, first performed in 1968 and based on the libretto by Argentine poet Horacio Ferrer. The piece is indicative of the Nuevo Tango style that is so closely identified with Piazzolla. This performance is choreographed by renowned Tango dancer and instructor Mauro Berreras with the Astor Piazzolla Ensamble and the MedEnsemble Choir. It features award winning Massimiliano Pitocco on the Bandoneon and is directed by Enrico Castiglione. This rare performance of Piazzolla's Opera Tango provides a rare glimpse into the art of this complex virtuoso. write your comments about the article :: © 2009 Jazz News :: home page |
