Rising Star Debbie Poryes June 4 Healdsburg Jazz Festival

Few things are more exciting than catching fast rising artists who are coming into their own. We've got a bevy of highly talented players on these programs that are forging highly personal approaches to jazz. She's a remarkable example of how far a piano trio can go: her impressionistic introductions on jazz standards like "Alone Together" and "The Sweet and Lovely" conjure Debussy, and when she swings she can sound like Bill Evans with a bit more muscle. It isn't often we get to hear the real thing in action at such a high level. - Ezra Gale, San Francisco Weekly

Debbie Poryes has been a faculty member of the Berkeley Jazzschool in Northern California since 2000, teaching jazz piano and functional harmony. Debbie brings a new voice to jazz piano with modern and swinging jazz arrangements of classic standards.

A gifted pianist and respected educator, Debbie Poryes has been an important figure in the Bay Area since her days studying and teaching with improvisation guru Art Lande in the 1970s. Poryes took a major step in 2008 with the release of her gorgeous trio CD, "A Song in Jazz" featuring ace bassist Bill Douglass and veteran drummer David Rokeach. While only her second recording under her own name, the album captures a fully realized musician with a keen melodic imagination, supple sense of rhythm and crystalline touch.
