| Zakiya Hooker Is "Keeping It Real" with New CD Release When your daddy is blues icon, the late great, four-time Grammy winner, John Lee Hooker, what's a blues sangin' sista to do? When posed with that dilemma, Zakiya Hooker has only one answer, and that is, "to keep it real." And on June 16, she plans to do just that when she releases her new CD, "Keeping It Real" produced by her husband, Ollan Bell, on their independent label, Boogie with the Hook Records distributed by BDC Distribution. Zakiya, the third of the Hooker offsprings, is no newcomer to the blues game. This is her fourth CD release. "Keeping It Real" will see her dueting with her dad, singing (or is that sangin'?) the blues in Spanish and just downright keeping it real! "This CD is very special to me because it is a blending of two cultures, " Zakiya reveals. Produced and recorded mostly in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Zakiya further explains, "This CD is a culmination of hard work and dedication that spans North and South America. It is truly a global work of love for all involved." "The wonder of this CD, " she adds, "is that I have not been in Buenos Aires for five years. My husband, Ollan, has spent the last six years gathering just the right people together to come up with a diverse collection of some of the finest musicians in Buenos Aires. He did the music and vocals in Buenos Aires and then came back to America for me to do my vocals in our home studio, John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Studio. Despite the language barrier and cultural differences the universal language of the blues brought us all together." It may be a man's world, but Zakiya Hooker brings the sass and the charm proving that 'it ain't nothing without a woman.' write your comments about the article :: © 2009 Jazz News :: home page |
