Musical May madness in Hastings

Although better known for that famous battle, Hastings and 1066 Country is also a hothouse of fine musical talent. Local boys Keane hail from Battle itself and former resident, the late John Martin found inspiration in the picturesque West Hill, with its stunning views over the sea and Hastings Old Town to write his well-known track 'Over the Hill'.

A Ronnie Scott's regular, Lianne Carole, can be found most weeks practising in one of the Old Town hosteleries and local resident, Sir Paul McCartney, (who once played backing singer to Lianne), has a recording studio housed in the Icklesham windmill just outside Hastings.

The annual Jack in the Green Festival, May 1 – 4 2009, Hastings provides four days of non-stop festivities including performances by folk band Movable Feast and BBC folk singer of the year, Chris Wood, along with a barn dance led by nationally known Chalktown. and The Sugar Loaf Band. The festivities culminate on the 4 May in a colourful procession of dance, music, and fire-eating through the picturesque Old Town of Hastings.

With plenty of free street entertainment on offer all weekend, this is a great way to welcome the summer, without spending a fortune.

The Black Horse Music Festival, Telham, Nr. Battle, 22 – 25 May 2009

Known as 'the biggest little festival in Britain', this popular four day extravaganza of non-stop music & entertainment for all ages is now in its 21st year. Blues, Folk, Celtic, World Music, Jazz, Soul and Rock artistes from around the world. Camping facilities available or if you fancy camping in style, try the nearby Crowhurst Park for pine lodges set in the extensive grounds of a 17th century manor house, complete with leisure facilities.

Battle Choral Society presents An Evening of Italian Music, at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill - 30 May 2009

Founded in 1903 Battle Choral Society is one of the longest established choirs in the South East. 100 voices, four excellent soloists with admirable CVs and a professional orchestra conducted by John Langridge, former Producer of Live Music for the BBC, plus a programme of Italian masterpieces. This is just one event in a respected season of musical performances at the fabulous De La Warr Pavilion, in itself a treat for fans of art deco architecture.
