| Folk Dance Group "Bulgare" Makes a Spectacular U.S. Debut After seeing the first 2 shows "This is Bulgaria" and "Bulgaria through the Centuries" you cannot wait to see the third show of the Bulgare Ensemble - Albena - which will surely astound you. Choreographer Hristo Dimitrov has created a breathtaking stage experience, adding a potent theatricality to the authentic dances and music of his native land. The folk show "This is Bulgaria" reveals the beauty and variety of Bulgarian dances, performed in three sections: "This is Bulgaria;" "Bulgaria Through the Centuries, " an overview of Bulgaria, the oldest European State formed in the year 681; and "Albena, " a frolicking celebration of Bulgarian women and folk song. The music by acclaimed composer Prof. Milcho Vassilev is a blend of traditional folk music and jazz, music that moves from haunting laments to explosive dances, from tender to fiery and everything in between. Musicians are featured on violin and gaida (a traditional Bulgarian instrument similar to bagpipes). Vocalist is Albena Veskova, former soloist with the renowned choir "Les Mysteres des Voix Bulgare, " which has toured worldwide. One of Bulgaria's greatest cultural ambassadors, Bulgare was created in 2002 by choreographer Dimitrov, producer Elena Anderson, and composer Prof. Vassilev. Since its founding, the Company has appeared in over 750 performances in Bulgaria, Israel, France, Japan, Austria, Romania, Greece, and Macedonia. The Company's U.S. engagements include Chicago (April 4), Boston (April 9), and Washington D.C. (April 11). write your comments about the article :: © 2009 Jazz News :: home page |
