Daniel Lanois

The 2008-09 Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee continues with Daniel Lanois, the 10-time Grammy-winning and five-time Juno Award-winning producer and recording artist who has worked with U2, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, and others. The concert – which kicks-off Lanois' three-day residency Berklee (and also features master drummer Brian Blade) – will take place Sunday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m., at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston.

An artist-in-residence in Berklee's Music Technology Division, November 16-18, Lanois will record a student band that includes Blade sitting in on drums. He and Blade will also give a clinic on playing guitar and drums within ensemble and recording contexts.

Daniel Lanois is one of the most distinctive and celebrated producers of his time, and a gifted composer and solo artist. Called "the most important record producer to emerge in the Eighties" by Rolling Stone, Lanois' signature sound is layered, atmospheric, and powerful. He favors emotional honesty over technical perfection, recording with vintage equipment and in such unorthodox settings as castles and dairy barns. He has produced or co-produced seminal albums by U2 (The Joshua Tree, The Unforgettable Fire, Achtung Baby, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, All That You Can't Leave Behind), Bob Dylan (Oh Mercy, Time Out Of Mind), Peter Gabriel (So, Us, Birdie), as well as recordings by Brian Eno, the Neville Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Luscious Jackson, Willie Nelson, and others.

Born in Hull, Quebec, Lanois' father played fiddle and his mother was a singer. After his parents' 1963 separation, he moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he learned to play guitar and began playing gigs with local artists. In 1970, he and his brother Robert bought a four-track and started recording local bands for a $60 fee; 10 year's later, they opened Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton. His break came in 1979 when Brian Eno, who was breaking new ground with his ambient music, began recording at Lanois' studio. This led to future collaborations as Eno's co-producer on many now-classic albums. In 1989, he released Acadie, his acclaimed debut as a singer/songwriter. His latest solo album Here Is What Is, the soundtrack to a documentary of the same name, was released in 2007.

Brian Blade has recorded and toured with Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, and many others. His band, the Brain Blade Fellowship, released its self-titled Blue Note debut in 1998 to critical acclaim. It was produced by Lanois, who also played guitar and mando-guitar on the album. His latest CD, Season of Change, was released in 2008 on Verve. From New Orleans, Blade has studied with Ellis Marsalis, John Vidacovich, and other Crescent City masters.

The 2008-2009 Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee presents eight concerts featuring Eva Ayllon, Wayne Shorter, Mint Condition, Philip Bailey, and more. Many of these artists will perform with Berklee students, faculty, or alumni, showcasing Berklee's own heavy-hitters alongside the best of contemporary folk, jazz, Latin, pop, and r&b.
