Fiddler Mark O’Connor to Perform One-night Only in Ventura

Grammy Award-winner fiddler, violinist and composer Mark O'Connor and his Appalachian Waltz Trio will perform selections from its Appalachian songbooks one-night-only on Saturday, November 1 in Ventura. The concerts is hosted by the Ventura Music Festival and sponsored by Ann Deal and Fashion Forms.

O'Connor, a violinist, fiddler and composer, is widely recognized as one of the most gifted contemporary composers in America and surely one of the brightest talents of his generation.

A product of America's rich aural folk tradition, Mr. O'Connor's journey began at the feet of violin masters Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson and French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. Along the way, between these two marvelous musical extremes, Mr. O'Connor absorbed knowledge and influence from a multitude of musical styles and genres.

With more than 200 performances, his first full length orchestral score "Fiddle Concerto" has become the most-performed modern violin concerto today.

His first recording for the Sony Classical record label, "Appalachia Waltz, " was collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and double bassist Edgar Meyer. The tremendously successful follow-up release, "Appalachian Journey, " received a GRAMMY Award in 2001.

In 2002, O'Connor formed a new chamber ensemble, The Appalachia Waltz Trio. Performing a repertoire O'Connor created for his Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey albums, The Appalachia Waltz Trio released its first album, "Crossing Bridges, " in 2004.

Celebrating its 15th season, the Ventura Music Festival will present world-renowned artists in unique historical locations for 10 days throughout the City of Ventura, April 30-May 9, 2009, including nine-time GRAMMY Award winner Paquito d'Rivera in February.
